About The Japan Table
We're a small team based in Japan. We started The Japan Table because English-language advice on Japanese tableware and craft is often thin: lots of listicles, not much on how to actually choose — the size, the clay, the stovetop, the care. We write the guide we wish we'd had.
How we write our guides
- Specs first. We build each guide from the makers' own specifications (for example Nagatanien and Ginpo for donabe) and from established Japanese-cookware and craft sources.
- First-hand over time. Being in Japan lets us handle these pieces, visit maker districts like Kappabashi, and add our own photos and notes. Where a guide is still spec-based, we say so, and mark where first-hand notes are coming.
- Human-checked. We use AI to help draft and organize, but the product facts come from makers and sources, and a person reviews accuracy before anything is published. We don't invent hands-on tests or reviews.
- One honest recommendation. Each guide points you to the piece that fits your use, not a wall of options.
How we're funded
Some links in our guides are affiliate links: if you buy through them, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. That never changes which products we recommend. See our affiliate disclosure for the full detail.
